Title: Musical Math Bingo
Submitted By: James Berry, North Conway, NH
Objective: Students will use their understanding of rhythmic values and their relationship with each other to add, subtract and relate this to their bingo game board.
National Standards Covered: Reading and notating music (5)
Materials:
- Musical Math Bingo Worksheet (Download here)
- Bingo Pieces (many things will work for this)
- Black or Whiteboard
Procedure:
1. Before doing this lesson, it is helpful if students have an understanding of how to do musical math. Try one of the earlier lessons on this subject if you think they need more preparation.
2. Explain that in order to do today's lesson they need to have a good understanding of quarter notes, half notes, whole notes (and perhaps others if you wish)
3. Pass out the blank bingo cards - laminate these if you wish. Have students write in numbers from 1-10 on each bingo space - they may repeat numbers if they wish. Pass out bingo pieces and also put students in partner groups if you wish.
4. Give a problem such as half note + half note = . Students would then put their bingo piece on the 4 on their bingo card. Make sure they only put it on one of the 4's - not all of them.
5. Keep repeating step 4 with varying degrees of difficulty until someone has reached bingo either by matching up their pieces horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Use the middle space as a free space.
6. When students get Bingo, check their answers with the problems you have given on the board.
Assessment / Extension:
Have students with more advanced skills make groups of their own and have one person assign the problems. Perhaps even use multiplication and division for the problems to challenge these students even further.
