Lesson 1.2: Three Simple Songs
Now that you have learned how to read the white keys on the piano and also your hand position, you are now ready to learn the simplest songs to play on the piano. Later on, we will discuss how to read treble clef, rhythms, and other music theory, but for now, I'm sure you'd rather just get playing.
Find a C on the piano (it's that white key before the 2 black keys in case you forgot), and put your thumb in your right hand on this note. Even if you are left handed, it is important that you put your right hand thumb on C.
Note: You may use any C on the piano, but the easiest one would be middle C. This is the 4th C from the very bottom of the piano.
Now, your other fingers will naturally fall on the other notes following C. Your thumb will be on C, your index finger on D, your middle finger on E, your ring finger on F, and your pinky on G. We call this position, right hand C position. Click here to see a diagram of this.
You are ready to play three simple songs. Follow the letters below and feel free to view the music, or listen to it, if you choose to.
Don't worry so much about where the letters are on the staff, just coordinate the letters with your fingers -
C - 1 (thumb)
D - 2 (index finger)
E - 3 (middle finger)
F - 4 (ring finger)
G - 5 (pinky)
This way you will get used to right hand C position and the way it feels in the right hand.
