I believe in every child; that they can learn to read music and play the piano. I use mostly the Alfred’s method of teaching but am open to using other methods to fit the needs of the individual student. The Alfred's books are paced so that there are no "gaps" in the curriculum. Each lesson or piece incorporates music theory as well. There are also recital, patriotic, Christmas and solo books for each level to keep each child interested in what they’re learning. I also use some John Thompson when a student gets to the intermediate level of playing because it focuses more on technique and classical style music.

Though I've only been teaching for 8 years, I have found so many piano teachers out there that do not stress music theory. I make sure the parents of my students know that their children will learn music theory as part of their piano program. My goal is to get my students to the point where they can sight read a piece of music without knowing what the song sounds like at first. I use flashcards, worksheets, board games and lots of different computer games to teach and reinforce theory in a fun way.
