Title:  Musical Recipe (1st grade)

Submitted By:  James Berry, North Conway, NH

Objective:  Students will combine vocabulary relating to tempo (speed), dynamics (volume), and instruments to produce a piece of music that fits their taste. Students will reflect on if the teacher or older student played the piece correctly.

National Standards Covered: Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines (4), Evaluating music and music performances (7)

Materials:

- Musical Recipe for 1st graders Worksheet

- Pencils, or other writing utensil

- 3 Instruments you are proficent at (I chose Trumpet, Piano, and Violin)

Procedure:

1. Students are told that today they will become musical chefs, using the knowledge that they already have. They will get to pick with a partner what they would like the music to sound like.

2. Group the students into partners and tell them how we are going to make our musical stew. Ask them to demonstrate different tempos, and dynamics and be sure they can tell the difference between the 3 instruments that you are going to play.

3. Ask them in partners with their writing utensil to circle the song, instrument, dynamic, and tempo of their choosing.

4. Collect their papers and go through each piece of music, performing it. Follow the assessment below.

Assessment/Extension:

Before performing their pieces, tell the students what each partner group requested. When you perform the piece, play some of them blatantly incorrectly to see if the students can pick up on what element of the piece was wrong. Play some correctly to try and see how well they are critically listening. Note which students have trouble identifying which elements. One extension you could have is to invite an older (perhaps 4th grade+) or a couple of older students in to be the one demonstrating the pieces. Make sure they are briefed in what to do before hand however. Have fun!
